As a teenager, before he gained the fame and glory as a painter, Jean-Michel Basquiat used to tag the walls of Manhattan with the pseudonym of Samo©. From 1977 to 1980, the Samo© tag spread across downtown New York accompanied by short poetic and sarcastic phrases. One of those notorious graffiti phrases is “Samo© for the so-called avant-garde”, a critical comment towards the elite art scene in SoHo and the art academy bourgeoisie.
